Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) of 1970, employers are required by law to provide workplaces free from recognized hazards. The law does not distinguish between indoor and outdoor work. This includes protection from heat stress and heat related injuries. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) and OSHA have several helpful links to reference regarding workers protection.
CDC - Workplace Heat Stress
CDC - Working in Hot Environments
OSHA Recommended Personal Protective Equipment - Auxiliary Body Cooling
Whether working by contract or hourly, freelance or self-employed, only you can determine your heat stress level. Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related disorder. It occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature: the body's temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. When heat stroke occurs, the body temperature can rise to 106 degrees Fahrenheit or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given. Some of the danger signals are:
- Hot, dry skin or profuse sweating
- Perspiring has stopped
- Hallucinations
- Chills
- Throbbing headache
- High body temperature
- Confusion/dizziness
- Slurred speech
Veskimo Personal Cooling System cools the core body temperature, so the risks for possible heat related illness is considerably decreased. If it is not feasible to wear the system "on-the-job," having access to the system during breaks and "cool-down-periods" will make recovery time less, thus allowing the employee to get back to work sooner and in better condition.
The vest can be worn under protective clothing if that is a job requirement. If not, the vest can be worn next to the skin, or over a thin t-shirt. By placing a layer of clothing over the vest you insulate it and yourself from the surrounding air, thus keeping more of the cold inside to cool your body. Three cooling reservoir options are possible, the backpack which can be worn over the protective garments for those mobile type jobs, or if mobility is not required, then either of the two coolers can be used, the 4.4 qt and the 9 qt systems.
